Kaela McDaniel- Introduction

Hi All! I'm Kaela McDaniel. I live outside of Evansville, Indiana in a more rural, farming community with my husband, our nearly two-year-old wild man, and two cats and two dogs. We are also due with our second after the first of the year.

I have a Bachelors in Athletic Training from the University of Evansville with current national certifications, but am also a Physical Therapist Assistant, Registered Orthopedic Technologist, Orthopedic Physician Extender, and Strength and Conditioning Specialist. I have worked in the Division 1 setting in Athletic Training during undergrad, NAIA level while I finished my Associates in Applied Science (PTA), and since then in the high school setting and in an orthopedic surgeon's office as a physician extender. I have also done some outreach work in the industrial setting.

My favorite place is Estes Park, Colorado. It was a cherished childhood memory during vacation, and I"ve since hooked my family on the magic there as well. The air is cleaner there and the wildlife and scenery are second-to-none. We could go every vacation if we let ourselves, but we try to put in some variation so the kids can pick their own favorite places.

I think a strong point of mine is the drive to undertake and finish anything I start. I don't function well with too much downtime, and often juggle more than I should. Perhaps enhanced since becoming a mother, I can run the household, the work environment, balance school work, and still make time for my family.

I'm interested to see what this course's content can add to my practice of patient-centered care. I have some experience with Pelvic Health and Bone health via professionals I worked alongside. There are certainly differences in the needs and patterning of female patients, and I hope to be able to better incorporate that into our orthopedic practice.

  1. Hi Kaela! So great to meet you! I am beyond impressed with your ability to juggle so many aspects of life and keep such a calm and collected confidence! You are a true case study in resilience, I wish I could bottle up that capacity and prescribe it to my postpartum patients to feel more confident that they too can 'survive it all'! I'm looking forward to learning from your experience and expertise in this course. (I'm also putting Estes Park, Colorado, on my 'must visit list' for the future!).

  2. Hi Kaela, it's so nice to get to know more about you! You defintely have a lot of experience and bring a wide array of perspectives to the table. I look forward to what you will bring to this class. I have never been to Estes Park, CO just Telluride so I will have to look into visiting there.

  3. Hi Kaela, it is interesting getting to read more about your education and healthcare professional experiences along your career. I see you are able to juggle a lot on your pate at time and I bet it helps a bit to be able to live in a quaint farming town of Evansville rather than a city town. I am looking forward to hearing more from you in this course. And I have to see about adding Indiana and Colorado to my places to visit list.

  4. Hi there Kaela. It is amazing to hear about your professional background. What is it like to be an ATC/PTA? I currently work in a PT clinic with DPTs and PTAs. I'm curious to hear your perspective. I have been to Estes Park, CO (I spend a lot of the winter in CO for snowboarding) and it is really nice! I look forward to working with you in this class!

    1. At least currently, I only work as an ATC. However, I do see a stronger sense of rehab and exercise choice with my patients for the PTA experience. Previously, I worked in a clinic during the day, and as an outreach ATC in the evenings. I believe they compliment each other, increasing my ability to function independently with more knowledge but also strengthening my referral processes and collaborative relationships.

  5. Hi Kaela, it's nice to see several athletic trainers in this course. I look forward to learning from you this fall. I especially hope your ability to juggle so many different rolls will rub off on me. That is truly amazing, and something I wish I was better at. Your ambition and drive are inspiring!

  6. Thanks, all, for the compliments. I'm note sure juggling so much describes it as well as "putting out fires", at least some days!

  7. Hi Kaela, it's nice to have you in the course. I agree with your peers that you bring a lot of different experiences to the class. Looking forward to learning more about your perspectives on the topics in the course, and what it is like to live in a rural, farming community. I was born and raised in San Francisco and the smallest city I lived in is Salt Lake City. : ) Congrats on having another child. I hope you can find time for yourself, too. You will learn more about pelvic floor disorders later in this course from experts in the field, but I hope you will learn new topics or at least have you think about different ways to approach working with your clients from a holistic way.
